- Why it is advised to buy travel insurance?
During a trip, problems can arise.
Travel insurance allows you to receive compensation for damages you may have suffered or caused during a stay abroad.
Here are the main guarantees of our assistance insurance contracts:
- Coverage of medical expenses, including Covid-19,
- Medical assistance and repatriation,
- Luggage insurance,
- Early return,
- Private liability insurance,
- Personal accident insurance,
- Legal assistance.
AVI International offers different travel insurance contracts tailored to your needs based on your trips: short vacations, long journeys and world tours, studies and internships abroad, Working Holiday program, expatriation, etc.
Note:
1. French embassies or consulates in your country of stay are there to help you.
In case of loss or theft of your documents, they will provide administrative assistance.
2. Social security will cover your medical expenses on-site.
This may be the case in Europe with the European Health Insurance Card, but not if you are outside the European Union or the European Economic Area. Note that coverage in Europe may be partial.
3. Credit cards do not always cover everything.
It depends on the type of card you have and the type of trips you are taking. Make sure to check the beneficiaries specified in the contract. If you incur medical expenses before notifying the assistance service, you will not be compensated.

- European Health Insurance Card
How to obtain the European Health Insurance Card before your departure?
You can obtain your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from your social security office. It allows you to prove your entitlement to health insurance and receive coverage for medical expenses in European Union and European Economic Area countries (EU/EEA), according to the laws and procedures in force in your country of stay. This way, you can receive the necessary medical care within the local public health system.
If medical services are free for residents of the country, they will be free for you as well, and you won't have to advance any money. You may, however, need to pay the co-payment (the part of medical expenses remaining at your expense).
If medical services are chargeable, you will need to pay the medical expenses on-site and request reimbursement from your health insurance office upon your return. The reimbursement will be made in accordance with the social security rates in force in your country of habitual residence.
Note that the EHIC does not replace the coverage of comprehensive travel insurance, which includes guarantees and assistance services (medical repatriation, early emergency return, visit by a relative in case of hospitalization, Luggage insurance in case of theft), or access to private healthcare.
What to do in case of emergency?
Depending on the circumstances, the medical advisor of your social security medical service will decide whether or not to reimburse your medical expenses. Any reimbursement of your medical expenses can occur upon your request, but only according to the social security rates of your country of habitual residence in effect on the date of the care.
Note: Such reimbursement is a possibility, not an obligation, as indicated by the French social security on its Ameli website.
Social security in no way replaces comprehensive travel insurance. Therefore, it is highly recommended to subscribe to an insurance contract that ensures coverage for medical expenses incurred, medical repatriation in case of illness or accident abroad, and early return in case of emergency.
- Credit Card Insurance
Can you rely solely on your credit card insurance?
1. Insurance and repatriation assistance guarantees
Insurance and repatriation assistance guarantees of credit cards vary depending on the type of card and the bank.
Insured persons are precisely defined, coverage limits may be insufficient, deductibles are often applied, and many activities and sports are excluded.
We recommend checking the general insurance conditions of your credit card before traveling.
2. Coverage duration:
Most credit cards offer travel insurance for the first 90 days of the trip. Beyond that, you are no longer covered.
3. Procedures to follow:
If you incur any expenses without notifying the assistance service, you will not be compensated.
- Geographical coverage zone: Where am I covered by my travel insurance?
You are covered based on the country or geographical area chosen when subscribing to your travel insurance.
We distinguish 3 destination zones:- European Union: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Reunion, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Martinique, Malta, Mayotte, Monaco, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden.
- World excluding USA/Canada
