When Can I Purchase Short Stay Travel Insurance?
You can subscribe to Routard short term travel insurance up to one year before your departure, and right up until the day before you leave. When you purchase online, simply enter your departure date, your coverage starts from day one of your trip.
What if I purchase after my departure?
You can still subscribe after you have already left, but a 15-day waiting period will apply to most benefits. This is standard practice across all travel insurance policies: travel health insurance is designed to cover sudden and unexpected events, not situations you are already aware of before subscribing. That said, if you need to be hospitalized during this waiting period, AVI International's assistance will still be there to support you from day one.
Sports and Activities Covered During Your Holiday
Routard holiday insurance covers leisure and holiday sports practiced as an amateur at no extra cost. The following activities are included in your standard coverage:
Winter sports including skiing and sledding, sea cruises, any aircraft travel as a passenger, and ice hockey in regions where it is a common youth sport.
Sports and Leisure extension, for active travelers
Want to surf, kayak, ride a scooter, or take part in adventure activities during your trip? The optional Sports and Leisure extension extends your coverage to accidents occurring during sports listed in annex 1 of the General Conditions of Insurance, and increases your luggage coverage to €5,000 (up to €2,500 for valuables). If you have an accident while practicing a sport through a club, Routard acts as secondary insurer after your club's own coverage.
Important Coverage Limitations to Know
The main exclusions of Routard insurance are: any illness or injury diagnosed or treated by hospitalization during the 6 months prior to departure; routine health assessments and check-ups; services related to pregnancy and maternity; sports practiced on a non-amateur or professional basis; and medical expenses incurred in breach of local government restrictions at destination. Coverage is also not applicable in countries in a state of civil or foreign war, or as a result of natural catastrophes.
Frequently Asked Questions, Holiday Travel Insurance
What is the difference between holiday insurance and standard travel insurance?
They are the same thing. Holiday insurance, short stay travel insurance, and short term travel insurance all refer to a policy covering a trip of a few weeks abroad. Routard is AVI International's dedicated product for stays from 1 to 8 weeks, combining travel medical insurance, repatriation, liability, and luggage cover in a single package.
Do I need travel health insurance if I already have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)?
The EHIC only covers public healthcare in EU countries and does not include repatriation, personal liability, or luggage. Outside of Europe, it provides no coverage at all. Travel health insurance like Routard fills all of these gaps and ensures you are fully protected wherever you travel.
Will I have to pay upfront if I need medical care abroad?
No. Routard provides direct coverage, AVI International liaises directly with hospitals and medical facilities to arrange payment, so you will not need to pay out of pocket in most situations. Your insurance card, available in the wallet app, gives you instant access to the 24/7 assistance number.
Is Routard the right insurance if my trip is longer than 2 months?
No. Routard covers stays up to 8 weeks (renewable once for a maximum of 16 weeks total). For longer trips, Marco Polo long stay travel insurance covers stays from 8 weeks up to 24 months.
Can I get a travel insurance certificate for my visa application?
Yes. An insurance certificate mentioning your medical coverage is sent by email immediately upon subscription. It is also available at any time from your personal AVI International account and can be used for visa applications or entry requirements.
