20/01/2016Want to go for a great bicycle tour? We have summarized the main steps that will allow you to be organized peacefully for this long journey.
Itinerary:
Bicycle touring limits the number of tourist sites that you can visit in a given time. But that's what makes it different: Because of the pace you enjoy more along the way. See less but see better!
To plan your itinerary, know that, on average, you will travel 80 kilometres a day, not including the necessary breaks. According to the total travel time you have, you will know what destination you can go to.
The tickets:
If you do not want to spend the first two months of your trip in Europe, you will probably want to take the plane. This will be the single big item of your travel expenditures.
You know the traditional advice to benefit from advantageous rates:
- Be flexible on the dates
- Buy your tickets far in advance
- Observe the prices on several price comparators websites ... and without comparators,
- Etc.

Transport your bike:
There are two schools among travelers by bike:
- Those who prefer to pay a high price for a beautiful unbreakable bike.
They are advised to leave their homes by bicycle (or train) because flight departures are complicated when transporting a bike. Especially since they are not covered by the luggage insurance!
Advantage: The strength of the bike (important if you travel for a long time and on chaotic roads
Disadvantage: The price, for high-end bikes, it takes about 2000 €. Beyond the immediate expenditure, there is also the stress of traveling with valuable equipment).
- Those who prefer to buy a less sophisticated bike. This allows you to go by plane and buy a bike in the first country of your journey.
However, it is better to acquire the accessories in France
Advantage: The price.
Disadvantage: Generally the bike weight is more important.
Many website give advice on how to equip your bike. To purchase simple equipment (bags, shoes, etc.): go to large specialized stores.
Bike transport:
• By air
In most countries, you can bring your bicycle to the airport, then it will be transported to your plane without being disassembled.
However, from France, it remains complicated.
Air France requires that the customer service gives its agreement, the traveler pays a supplement of € 55 to 100 and requires that the bicycle be in a protective packaging sold in most airports. All information about transporting the bicycles with Air France are on its website.
Skyscanner.fr listed all fees and conditions applied in the main companies from France. The most "bicycle friendly" are Lufthansa and Emirates. A full comparison of prices by Airline is available on their website.
The English website CTCShop.org.uk offers bike slipcover (about € 13) adapted for air travel.
Last tip: deflate your tires! With the pressure, they may burst.
• By train
The SNCF offers to check a "I travel by bike" box at the end of your reservations. You will pay an extra 10 € for your bicycle, which does not need to be folded.
Check if you have the possibility to travel with your bike depending on the type of train you take and see all the necessary information in the dedicated sections:
